Effluent Pump-Out Systems (Bull. 9-20.B.1)
Function
AFL effluent pump-out systems provide automated discharge of water from the outlet chamber of a separator. The transfer may be to a sewer system, waterway, drainage ditch or storage. Pump-out will be necessary when positioning of the separator in the installation will not permit gravity discharge of the effluent.
In operation, a level control regulates effluent discharge. When the liquid in the outlet chamber reaches a predetermined height, the level controls starts the pump. The pump continues to operate until the effluent level is about 6 to 8 inches from the bottom. Then the level control stops the pump until the outlet chamber refills- after which the process repeats itself.
In a duplex system, the outlet chamber is supplied with two pumps. A second pump permits:
- Alternate operation to double the life of a single pump.
- One pump to serve as standby in the event of failure of the other.
- Extra pumping capacity to handle flows exceeding the rating of the separator and single pump.
Should the pump(s) fail and the level of the effluent exceed a predetermined height, a high level alarm alerts nearby personnel. If the installation is in an unattended area, the annunciator (light or buzzer), may be located remotely at a manned control panel.
Factory built and installed pump-out systems provide the most functional, cost-effective and dependable means of transferring effluent.
